Three Things Came

The April 2019 Three Thing Game has finished with more great games being made.

An account of the event follows.

Judged the winners

We decided to try something different with the judging this time to try and more explicitly recognise the contributions of the different disciplines: audio, visual, and technical. So we had the judges (a team of celebrity judges from local employer StyleTech, who were also kind enough to sponsor our pizza) select the top game in each of those categories.

As it happens, it was a clean sweep with the team “Parse(Nips);” winning in every category with their game The Last Straw ( Their Three Things were Slave, Follow, and Paradox, so naturally they went for a time-traveling scarecrow bent on vengeance!

The Parse(Nips); are multi game jam veterans who I have been excited to see develop their skills and team effectiveness over several years now. Congratulations to them for a delightful game.

People’s Choice

In addition to the judged categories, we also ran a People’s Choice award. Each of the teams could have a look at (and try) all of the games that were made at the weekend and rate them. The Last Straw did well, achieving second place, but the winners of the People’s Choice were the “Arduino Assassins” with their game Taking the Hiss (

This father-son team took their words Taking, Snake, and Race, and true to their team name they developed a game based around an Arduino microcontroller board. In this physical game you had to navigate the controller around the pipe without touching it. This is a classic electronic game that many may remember from days gone by, but this version was taken to another level. Also following the pipe is the snake, a brightly coloured LED track, that starts off slow and gets faster as the levels increase. Touch the pipe and the snake leaps forward. You have to beat the snake to the end to progress on to the next level.

It was amazing to see this take shape over the weekend. It is a genuine physical presence and viscerally fun to play.

There is more than that though. We used the platform to manage the People’s Choice vote and leave a showcase of the magnificent games that were made. It is worth checking them all out, and you can do that here (

Next time

The next Three Thing Game will be around November (dates pending). I can’t wait!
